Small Press comics at Bristol

This weekend, 14th - 15th May, the Bristol Comic Expo is taking place, with many of the worlds comic greats gathering at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, including quite a few of Tharg's shiniest droids. You may even spot a few of 2000AD Review's contributors propping up a bar until the early hours of the morning (alas, your esteemed Review editor will be propping up a bar in London, as he ages yet another year on Saturday).

As mentioned in this week's Nerve Center, the Expo is also the opportunity for some of the UK's finest small press to unleash their new wares. So if you're heading down to Bristol, here's what to keep an eye out for and if you're not - you'll find full contact and mail order details as well as further information direct from the creators below. So support your fellow Squaxx and order them all now!

Empirical Majesty
Empirical Majesty

"The world is on the cusp of the 20th Century, but modernity is already upon us. The Scientific Revolution of 18th century Britain was taken literally. The old social and political order was overthrown following a brief, technologically unbalanced civil war in which the Armies of Reason deployed the technological marvels of poison gas, air power and mobile fortresses. Mad King George III, condemned for his irrationality, fled to the New World, where the Hanoverian States of America are established, governed as we open the story by his opium addled granddaughter, Queen Victoria. The technocratic councils that govern Britain give free rein to the power of the thinkers, building an open, progressive and globally powerful nation. However, the appearances of freedom may be a veneer hiding a more sinister means of control.

The turn of the 20th Century is a time when empires abut, jostling for position and power. In Europe the Prussians challenge the supremacy of Britain, while across the Atlantic the House of Hanover schemes to regain their Old World throne. Faced with these threats, and possessed by a desire to avoid open, destructive conflict, Britain turns to its Covert Diplomacy Corps to gather intelligence and defuse any crises. One of foremost CDC agents is Kelvin Vijay Brooke, Professor of Ethology at Empirical College of Science and Technology, London. We enter his story at a period of uneasy peace between the powers."

The End is Nigh
The End is Nigh!

THE END IS NIGH! examines the latest predictions, the facts, the figures, the myths and the magic of the end of the world. From Biblical tales of the final battle at Armageddon, to modern fears of asteroid strike, lethal plague or nuclear holocaust, THE END IS NIGH! is your guide through the Final Days … Each issue will carry its own theme and features news, comic strips, newspaper-style strips, spoof articles, advice, in-depth features and thought-provoking articles.

The first apocalyptic theme we’re exploring is ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE! For too long, the shuffling undead have been relegated to the realm of the B-movie and the comedy show. But we ignore them at our peril! No longer is it the threat of some Haiti huckster mumbling a voodoo curse, this issue we explore the very real threat from rogue viruses and look at how quickly a disease that reanimates its victims could spread around the world. With outbreaks of Ebola and Marburg virus swamping warn-torn regions of Africa with abandon, perhaps such concern is not as far-fetched as you might expect! But when do you hear of fears about zombies? Where is the government Minister for Undead Affairs or the handy emergencies guide (see below - we stray where governments fear to tread!) This issue, we examine the evidence and ask whether zombies are a threat the world can afford to keep ignoring! But it’s not all rotting limbs and nasty bite-marks this issue; there’s our regular DOOMWATCH feature where you’ll not only find the latest predictions for our collective demise, but a whole host of news that could give you the jump on The End.

Look out for an exclusive Frazer Irving t-shirt design we will be selling at Bristol and look at the website for more details.
