American Gothic
Preview
At this year's
Dreddcon, we found out more about American Gothic from writer Ian Edginton and
artist Mike Collins. We caught up with Mike to find out more about the series,
as well as getting a couple of exclusive preview images from him.
How would you
describe American Gothic?
It's a supernatural
western - that's how Ian Edgington pitched it to Tharg. Ian's gotten a reputation
for producing series that are weird and off-beat dealing with elements that 2000AD
hasn't previously touched on: the pirate genre, the haunted ship etc, and giving
them a very 2000AD spin. It's dark and funny and pretty nasty.
This is, I
believe, the first time in 2000AD where you're creating the look of the series
from scratch. Has this changed the way you've approached it?
Yep. 2000AD has
an amazing critical mass of history that looms over anything you do. When I drew
Slaine it was during Glenn Fabry's fabulous run and I worked very much in the
shadow of that. Dredd is always in the shadow of Mick McMahon for me when drawing
it. Rogue Trooper is Dave Gibbons and Colin Wilson. I'm not consciously aping
styles but I'm very much riffing on what's gone before. On American Gothic I can
still draw on influences, but they're outside 2000AD - French westerns and 50s
EC comics. I'd like to think that I change my art to suit the flavour and tone
of the strip.
When can we
expect to see it?
Spring Offensive.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll squint awkwardly at the grosser bits.
And finally
- can we ever expect a return visit from The Kleggs?
Oh I hope so. I
had a ball doing the Kleggs... and we had more goofy stupid ideas for future stories.
We haven't nagged Alan Barnes for a while. We should do again when AmGoth is finished!
