2000AD Review Forum > Comics N' Stuff > Site Suggestions and Comments

Well, as some of you may be aware, the site's been very slow of late. Unfortunately, due to many other commitments - the biggest being my other site, which is taking all my spare time - I'm once again looking at closing down 2000AD Review.

So - there are two options available at this time...

1. I close down the site fully. It will stay up on the rebellion servers, if they're OK with that, but it will no longer be updated. The forum will be closed.

2. We keep the site running with new weekly/monthly reviews only. I think I could keep this updated - but I can't spare the time to chase for reviews and remind people of deadlines. So if someone else was willing to take that on - I'd keep that aspect of the site going. The homepage will be simplified to reflect this. The forum will also close - as I think the main site forum is taking up the slack these days.

3. The site keeps going, but someone else stays on as Editor - and I can act as a supervisory role. I.e. telling them how to use the content management system, helping out in design and HTML when needed.

So - what are the thoughts? Anyone interested in 2 or 3? Feel free to post on the main board too.

I hate to play Devil's advocate but does anyone read the reviews?

I certainly feel that I'm writing them for my own amusement.

It's a fair question.

The weekly reviews get between 750 - 1000 hits each (with older reviews getting up to 2000)
The megazine reviews get anything between 1000 and 2500 hits each.

So a fair few people are reading them over time...

Sorry to hear about this. I hope someone would like to pick up as editor, as it's nice to read other people's feedback. But either way, it has been a great site over the last few years.

I'm sorry to hear this but it seems inevitable - I enjoy writing reviews but I know I couldn't take on the responsibility of organising them.

But, I've had a lot of fun here over the last 5 years or so!

For what it's worth, they're an essential part of my Monday morning. I've been here as long as I've been reading the Prog and Meg, I don't know anyone else who does so it's interesting to hear other people's opinions. I'd be gutted to see the site go, but thanks for the past four years Gavin! celb.gif wub.gif

I also love the reviews. I try and get hold of progs when I can but supply where I am is intermittent so it's a great way to keep up with things.

If this is still a viable option, I'd be happy to take on the editorial aspect if it keeps the reviews coming. I think the Prog, Meg and Book reviews are excellent and some of the feature/interview content on this site could have appeared in the Meg.

I might need to cast around for additional help if the feature stuff was to continue, but I'd happily shepherd the Prog/Meg review process if that's what you need to keep the thing going.

Contact me directly on jimDOTcampbellATmacDOTcom if you want to discuss further.

Cheers!

It has indeed become much quieter in here. I often read the reviews. Perhaps part of the problem is the official site now has a much better forum than THEY did ages back. Love this site & would hate to see it go. I know that the likes of John Wagner lurk from time to time & clearly the interviews we've had over the years show that all of Gavins hard work is appreciated by many.

A couple of other thoughts

A Vote? Site close v site continues with someone else or a team of others at the helm?

Merge 2kreview into main 2k site?

I dunno -- I've offered (I think on two separate occasions) to take up the slack on editorial duties here, without so much as an acknowledgement from Gavin, and I don't know what to make of that.

Cheers

That's a shame Jim - maybe he's on holiday or something? It would be good to continue this site, if only for the reviews, and if you're offering that chance it would be sad to see it go begging.

Hi all - sorry for not responding earlier, been a bit busy.

I've been mulling over things for the last few weeks, and I think it's definitely time to close up shop. So thanks very much for the offer Jim - but on reflection, and judging by the reaction I've got from the regular reviewers (positive, but understanding that it's time to stop), I do think it's time to call it a day properly. It'll take quite a bit of time to sort out a proper handover, and I just don't have that time at the moment or in the foreseeable future.

So... two more reviews left, and then a big feature to round everything off (more on that soon). The forum will point to the 2000AD online one, and this one will close down. The rest of the content will continue to be accessible.

Who knows, in a few years I might revive it - but in a few weeks' time it'll be shutting in its current form.

Thanks Gavin, it's been a fun & friendly place for almost five years of my life. I can only offer you my thanks & I think it's maybe for the best to wind it all up.

Can't say fairer than that, Gavin. Add my thanks to those of everyone else for providing an entertaining, informative corner of the internet that I will certainly miss.

Cheers!

Late to this news!

Seems a shame, and I'll certainly miss the site, but I can't say it's entirely unexpected. It's certainly been something of a ghost town this summer as ever more of the 2kreview regulars jump ship to the other board. Really enjoyed my time here though and I'm sure I'll continue to see everyone on that 'other' board.

Late to the news as well (been out of the 2000AD loop for a year or so) this is very disheartening news. When I was getting into 2000AD around 2004/2005 this site was an invaluable resource it getting me up to speed. A great forum, great reviews, great features. Sad day to see it go.

Good luck with all your future plans Gavin.

Had a good run. Thanks for all the good stuff and hard work. cool.gif
