Yes, it would be more doable, but stil I feel far less likely. It's all about name recognition, it seems, at least when you want a budget big enough to do a film like Strontium Dog properly, and Dredd is way more famous than Strontium Dog.

Are there any other 2000 AD characters that might possibly be famous enough to sell a movie? Slaine, maybe? Zenith? Nemesis?
Not that Mills or Morrison are likely to sign off on that...

I think this could work, as always depends who wrote/acted or films it. Its sci-fi. So can't go too far wrong you'd think.

Strontium Dog would need less money spent on sets as you could start off with the crime being committed. Lets say Jack the Ripper has just killed his last victim. Sudden flash of light and strange noise. Ripper turns round and he see's Alpha & Wulf, expression say's it all. Audience see from Alpha's viewpoint.
Next we are at the Doghouse following the Ripper through the jailing process.
We then go to the bar and see all the mutants having a joke and relaxing.
Our duo then enter with a few pats on the back.

Cue big reveal and titles with a flashback of how world got to the way it is now and how the SD Agency was formed (lets not reveal Johnny's relatives until a sequel)

We then follow them on a big job on an outer rim world. You could have this crime being set on a world very much like the way Serenity was (Westernish but with a sci-fi element).
From this you can add and change to the story as you wish even doing a flashback of how Wulf became his partner.

Anyway that's the sort of way I would see the first film opening up wink.gif

A Johnny Alpha not played by Simon Pegg? Wrongness.

They've made films out of obscure comics like Painkiller Jane, and some other oscure comics that I should really list to make my point but I can't remember. But anyway, there's probably at least a small chance of it happening

To be honest I'm not the biggest Strontium Dog fan, but I agree it probably could make a very good movie and it wouldn't really have to be that big a budget. Like you say it would be easier than Dredd.

I think the name would sell it to a lot of people without even knowing it was a comic.

I like it!

So who would play Wulf? And can we get Rob Schneider to play the Gronk? tongue.gif

Id get Rutger Hauer to be Wulf, as I see him (Wulf) as being a fair bit older than Johnny. I am sure most audiences wouldnt notice the (German/Scandinavian) accent shift !
MiddenFace ?- Kevin McKidd- he of Dog Soilders, Rome, Trainspotting ( ie, no need to put on an accent !)

And the Twins from The Matrix could be put to good use somewhere.........

Kreelman? the actor who played the head of the bank/firm that looked after the rose ,and pretended to be the security van driver in The DaVinci Code?( i think he was in Dredd too, as a chief judge)

Simon Pegg would have to do the Voice Of Gronk, as well as play a supporting role of a mutant. Unless he beefcaked up like Will Smith in ALi.

With the time traveling element, we'd have some nice set pieces. With Nazi's maybe?

Alpha turning up in das Bunker & blowing some people away before snatching Hitler away before he could kill himself. Maybe punching him repeatedly in the face, so much so that he spits out a good few teeth 'mien gut'. Save it for someone who gives a stomm. Damn warrant says alive, otherwise I'd have fragged you & collected your DNA. An erie blue light & the air about the ripples & the bunker is in darkness.

So, basically... the Schiklegruber Grab? Which, actually, is not a bad idea as the basis for the film.

Honestly I'd see that as far far too silly for an entire film. It'd be a good "establishing" opening piece. But I like Jack the Ripper idea above more.

My thoughts are there would be several. Maybe the opening of the film would be in a certain time in history to wrong foot the audience. Egypt, Nazi Germany, Old London town - it doesn't matter for this thread. But the idea being that you'd have 5-10 minutes set in one place. So it would look like a set from a different movie. Then erie blue light, Johnny Alpha coming in taking whoever it might be, freezing time & getting out of there. SO then back to the dog house. Seen from space, then some naration - the year, a brief run down of what they do, when, & how. Then - inside the dog house . . .

This is a great thread, guys. You've got me so hyped up to see this non-existent movie, I've bought the popcorn already.

I havent read a time jump sequence in Strontium Dog for years ( need to get the reprints !), but is it like in Heroes, where everybody freezes ?

Ive forgotten, disdain.gif

But yes, def a five-ten minute intro to the character set in a totally different era/feel would be the best way.The thing about the whole idea is the character progress to film is very easy, open to everyone, even Hollywood wouldnt need to jazz it up in some wrong way as they did with Dredd.

Isnt there that awful Discovery Channel series about a US Bounty Hunter though?
