Home ¦ Fiction ¦ The V.C.s: Lost in Translation

8th May 04

This is the "Directors Cut" of a one page strip that appeared on the official site. Work is underway to illustrate this.
by Richmond Clements

Page 1 Classic 9 frame grid

Frame 1: Exterior shot of VC ship floating in space.

LIN-FU: Sir, we’ve intercepted a transmission!

Frame 2: A group of armoured VC’s are moving across the surface of a rugged planet, in the lead is Smith. They’ve stopped under cover of a large rock while he answers the call.

SMITH: Patch it through.

Frame 3: Lin-Fu at her control panel on board the ship. I don’t know about you, but I’m trying not imagine her like Uhura with the thing in her ear…

LIN-FU: Sending now…

FROM RADIO: Gee! Gg’nakyeeg kngneet

Frame 4: A Geek patrol. One is holding a communicator to its head; another has a pair of binoculars, the rest carry guns.

FROM GEEK RADIO: Gg’ggthek ng’thyeek y’t’gket

Frame 5: POV shot, from Geek binoculars. We can see the other side of the rock Smith is hiding behind. His helmet it partly visible around the side of the rock.

CAPTION: ‘Gtannet’th ggt’eekh yyy’kketah!’

Frame 6: We’re back with Smith and his group behind the rock. If it’s possible to look nervous in one of those suits, then these guys do.

LIN-FU (OVER RADIO): Transmission terminated, sir.

SMITH: What did it say, Lin-Fu?

Frame 7: With the Geek patrol again. They are moving closer and closer to the VCs’ hiding place.

Frame 8: Interior of VC ship, back with Lin-Fu. Knowing what the punch line is, it’s understandable that she is looking sheepish about what she’s saying.

LIN-FU: I don’t know sir, it’s all-

SMITH (OVER RADIO): Don’t say it VC!

Frame 9: Here was have a shot of Smith, from ground level, looking up and past his shoulder. He’s facing forward, and totally oblivious to the Geek soldier creeping over the top of the rock above him, a big Geek knife in it’s filthy alien hand.

LIN-FU(ON RADIO): all Geek to me sir.

Page 2: 4 Frames

Frame 1: The geek with the blade leaps from the rock, and onto Smiths’ back.

GEEK: G’AHHIIII!

SMITH: DAMMIT!

Frame 2: As the rest of the geeks swarm over and around the rock, attacking the rest of the VCs, Smith has ignited his backpack, and is shooting into the air, with the geek hanging onto his back.

Frame 3: Ryx, Kali and Keege, the rest of the group, are shooting all round them, standing back to back, they seem to be keeping the geeks at bay.

RYX: Crap! Were did Smith go?

KALI: Suck it in! We’ve got more pressing matters right now!

Frame 4: Close up on one of the VCs. Lets be honest, with the helmet on, it doesn’t matter which. Lets say Kali for the sake of argument.

KALI: What’s that noise?

SOUND EFFECT: Rrrummmmble

Frame 4: From ground level: A Geek ship has pulled up over the heads of the three VCs.

KEEGE: Oh G’hit.

RYX: You said it buddy...

Page 3: 8 Frames

Frame 1: We’re back with Smith, as he flies desperately through the air, with the Geek still hanging on. Perhaps it is still trying to stab at him, and he’s holding its’ knife arm by the wrist.

SMITH: I’ve had enough of this!

Frame 2: Smith has flipped over, so that he is head down, and slammed the Geek into a large rock.

Frame 3: Both Smith and the Geek have staggered to their feet, the Geek is holding it’s blade out in front of it.

SMITH: Okay boy, show me what you got.

Frame 4: The Geek has lunged forward with the blade, but Smith has turned at the waist, so its arm has gone past him.

Frame 5: (This is where my years of Kung-Fu finally pay off!) Smith has grabbed the Geek's arm. He has one hand, palm up, below its’ arm, behind the elbow, the other is above the forearm.

Frame 6: If you imagine him pushing up with the hand below, and jerking down with the hand above, then you’ll see that he’s snapped it’s elbow.

Frame 7: Smith has bent the Geek’s broken arm right round the wrong way, and has run it through the gut with the blade it is still clutching.

Frame 8: Smith standing over the dead body of the Geek. Hero shot.

SMITH: Frickin’ Geek.

Page 4: 7 Frames.

Frame 1: Back with the main group again, pretty much in the same position we had left them before, surrounded and with the ship above them. The VCs have their hands in the air.

KALI: Any ideas?

RYX: I dunno, I was thinking about crapping myself.

Frame 2: A big explosion erupts in the middle of the group of Geeks that are surrounding the VCs.

Frame 3: Inside the Geek ship, they are pointing at a screen, which shows Smith firing at them with a bazooka.

Frame 4: The Geek ship fires its engines, and sets off towards Smith, as another shell lands among the Geeks. Seeing their chance, the VCs start to fight back. Punching, kicking or firing at the remaining Geeks with retrieved weapons.

RYX: HIT ‘EM, VCs!

Frame 4: The Geek ship is rushing towards Smith. He stands, in the foreground, with his back to us, bazooka on his shoulder.

Frame 6: Side on (ish, whatever you want) of Smith firing the weapon.

SMITH: Smile, you son of a –

SOUND EFFECT: CHUNNT!!

Frame 7: The shell explodes spectacularly on the front of the Geek ship.

Page 5: Okay, four frames on this page, each going lengthways across the page, like a widescreen picture.

Frame 1-3: Starting in the first frame, we are pretty far out, we see the Geek ship impact with the ground, and Smith is just a small figure on the opposite side of the frame. Frame 2 and we have pulled in a bit, as the ship ploughs across the ground, closer to Smith, who hasn’t moved. In frame 3, the ship has eventually ground to a halt, inches from Smith’s feet. He still hasn’t moved.

Frame 4: From behind Smith. The Geek ship fills the background. Smith is standing with his back to us. Legs apart and his bazooka pointing upwards, you know, another hero shot.

SMITH: This place is clean VCs, let’s move out.
