Judge Dredd: The Line
Part 2
By Richmond Clements

PAGE 1
Three frames. Frame one takes up the entire page with its grand vista, with the other two frames being set on top of it.

Frame 1: Judge Keys is sitting astride his Lawmaster, in a watching bay, taking in the magnificent view of the city around him.

RADIO JAG: REPORT OF ALTERCATION AT THE MONKEY BAR. ANY UNITS IN THE AREA?

Frame 2: Head shot of Keys, with radio mike held to his face.

KEYS: KEYS HERE. I’M FIVE MINUTES AWAY, I’LL TAKE IT.

RADIO JAG: ALL YOURS KEYS. CONTROL OUT.

Frame 3: Keys roaring off into traffic. A couple of cars have to swerve out of his way.

SFX LAWMASTER SIREN: WEEEOOOEEEEOOOO!

SFX CARS: SCREEEEE!!

PAGE 2
Seven frames

Frame 1: Exterior of Grand Hall of Justice.

CAPTION: GRAND HALL OF JUSTICE.

Frame 2: Interior of Dredd’s office. You can imagine how Spartan it is, no clutter or desktop toys. Just books of law and a computer terminal on the desk and a picture of Vienna. Dredd is seated behind the desk, working at the computer.

DREDD: COMPUTER, SHOW ME THE FILE FOR JUDGE KEYS.

Frame 3: Over Dredd’s shoulder, we’re looking at the screen with him. We can see Keys’ picture on the screen, and there is a load of text, too much for us to make out. But that’s alright, because Dredd will read it for us.

DREDD: PARENTS DIED IN AN ACCIDENT WHEN HE WAS A CHILD. GIVEN INTO CARE OF JUSTICE DEPARTMENT. OLDER BROTHER FOSTERED.

Frame 4: Dredd is leaning back in his chair, looking thoughtful.

DREDD: BROTHER... COMPUTER, SHOW ME THE BROTHER’S FILE.

Frame 5: Close up on the screen. On it is a series of mug shots; it’s our friend Dice.

DREDD: DROKK! IT’S THE PERP FROM THE WAREHOUSE!

Frame 6: Dredd is on his feet, heading quickly to the door.

DREDD: CONTROL, GIVE ME THE LOCATION OF JUDGE KEYS

CONTOL JAG: CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING A DISTURBANCE AT THE MONKEY BAR.

Frame 7: Exterior of Grand Hall of Justice, with Dredd roaring towards us in the foreground upon his Lawmaster.

DREDD: I’M ON MY WAY!

PAGE 3
Eight frames.

Frame 1: Exterior of the Monkey Bar. Keys has his gun in his hand, and is kicking open the door of the bar.

Frame 2: Interior of bar. The door has burst open. Keys is in the doorway, with his gun raised in a two handed grip, covering the room. We are looking at Keys, we can’t see the room.

KEYS: NOBODY MOVE!

Frame 3: Keys POV. We take in the view of the bar room. There has obviously been a fight. Tables and chairs are overturned; there is broken glass on the floor. There are only a few patrons in the bar, a couple are leaning against the bar, holding at bleeding wounds. On the floor in the middle of the room, there is a man lying, a pretty young woman is cradling him in her arms.

Frame 4: Keys is crouching down in front of the man and woman. He is touching the man lightly on the throat, checking for a pulse. We can see now that the man has a serious head wound, the woman is crying, tears rolling down her cheeks. She is obviously too upset to answer Keys’ questions.

KEYS: WHAT HAPPENED HERE?

KEYS CONT.: WHAT HAPPENED!?

Frame 5: Full length shot of one of the men at the bar, he’s holding his left arm in his right, with what looks like a gunshot wound in the left arm.

PATRON #1: SOME LOUDMOUTH GUY CAME IN. HE STARTED IT. HE WAS JUST LOOKING FOR TROUBLE.

Frame 6: Keys has stood up, and is standing in front of the man at the bar, the second patron at the bar is also there, he also has a head wound, though not too serious maybe a cut on the forehead.

KEYS: WHO WAS HE? DID YOU KNOW HIM?

PATRON #1: NAH. NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE, JUDGE.

PATRON #2: I KNOW HIM.

Frame 7: Close up on patron #2.

PATRON #2: HE JUST RAN OUT THE BACK A MINUTE AGO. HE’S GOES BY THE NAME DICE.

Frame 8: Tight on Judge Keys.

KEYS: DROKK!

PAGE 4
Five frames. Would the fifth frame work as a banner frame, across the bottom third of the page?

Frame 1: Exterior of the bar again. Dredd is parking beside Keys’ Lawmaster

Frame 2: Interior of the Monkey Bar. It’s the same as it was the last time we where here, with a couple of slight changes. Keys is no longer there, and Dredd is.

DREDD: WHAT THE HELL’S GOING ON HERE?

Frame 3: Dredd is looking down at the man on the floor, as one of the men at the bar fills him in on what’s going on.

PATRON #1: THE OTHER JUDGE JUST WENT AFTER THE GUY WHO DID IT.

Frame 4: Dredd is crouched on the floor, examining the prone form in the woman’s arms.

DREDD: DEAD.

DREDD CONT: WENT AFTER WHO?

PATRON #1 FROM OFF FRAME: GUY CALLED DICE.

Frame 5: Exterior. The alleyway behind the bar. It’s the same alley we’ve seen in every episode of Starsky and Hutch. Keys has caught Dice. Dice has a tramp around the neck, using him as cover, with a blaster at the tramps head. Keys has his Lawgiver pointed at his brother.

Dredd is running towards them in the background.

DICE: COME ON TERRY...

KEYS: DROP IN WEAPON CREEP!

DICE: TERRY...

KEYS: I SWEAR TO GRUD, I WILL SHOOT!

PAGE 5

Frame 1: Dredd has his gun on Keys, Keys has his gun on Dice, Dice is still behind the worried looking tramp. Think Reservoir Dogs.

DREDD: TAKE HIM KEYS. OR I TAKE YOU.

KEYS: DREDD. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND...

DREDD: I UNDERSTAND MORE THAN YOU THINK KEYS. HE MAY BE YOUR BROTHER, BUT YOU’RE A JUDGE AND HE’S A PERP.

Frame 2: Mid length of Dice and the tramp.

DICE: TERRY, DON’T LISTEN TO HIM. HE’LL KILL YOU IF HE GETS THE CHANCE. COME ON BRO...

TRAMP: BROTHERS..? MAYBE I SHOULD GO...

Frame 3: Just the heads of Keys in the foreground and Dredd behind are visible.

DREDD: YOU KNOW ME KEYS. YOU KNOW THAT’S NOT TRUE. TAKE HIM AND GET ON WITH THE JOB. YOU’RE ON THE LINE KEYS. DON’T CROSS IT.

Frame 4: Similar to frame 1, but tighter. We can see that Keys is gripping his gun so tight his hand is trembling. A tear is rolling down his cheek from below his helmet.

KEYS: DROP THE GRUDDAM WEAPON DICE!

Frame 5: Dice and the tramp.

DICE: YOU KNOW I CAN’T DO THAT TERRY. I’LL-

Frame 6: View from behind Dice. Keys has fired his gun, and shot Dice in the face. His body is being thrown backwards by the force of the shot; the back of his head is bursting with the exit wound.

SFX: BLAMM!

Frame 7: Dredd, still in the background, is looking at Keys. Keys has his head down, echoing his pose at the end of part one.

DREDD: GOOD WORK KEYS.

Frame 8: Keys has not moved, but Dredd as turned his back on him and is walking away.

DREDD: SEE YOU ON THE STREETS.

END.
