Judge Dredd: The Line
Part 1
By Richmond Clements

Page 1
Six frames.

Frame 1: We are inside a warehouse. It is dark, shadowy. A group of four men, clearly perps, are in the foreground, standing in a pool of light. The one we are interested in is DICE. PERP #1 is handing him a package.

PERP #1: HERE YOU GO DICE. A TASTE OF THE SWEET STUFF.

Frame 2: Exterior. Half a dozen judges, seated on lawmasters are hiding behind a stack of boxes, obviously in the same vicinity as the warehouse. One of them is DREDD, and another is our next major player, JUDGE KEYS. A third judge in the group has an earpiece held to the side of his head.

RADIO JAG: NICE. I GOT YOUR CREDS RIGHT HERE

RADIO JUDGE: DEAL’S DONE, DREDD.

Frame 4: Close up on Dredd, his face set in a grim snarl.

DREDD: MOVE IN.

Frame 5: Interior on the warehouse. We’re back with the perps. Dice is handing over a stack of creds to perp #1. In the background, behind the group, we can see the large front entrance to the warehouse, with the door closed.

Frame 6: Same shot as frame 5. With a few changes. Each of the perps has turned his head towards the door. The two not involved in the transaction have reached their hands inside their jackets. The warehouse door is exploding inwards. The group of Judges is roaring through the freshly made hole.

DREDD: THIS IS THE LAW!

Page 2:
Eight frames

Frame 1: Tight-ish on the four perps. The two non speaking parts have their guns drawn, firing at the group of judges. Both Dice and perp #1 are looking shocked.

PERP #1: DROKK!

Frame 2: As the two gunmen fire furiously, their leader, perp #1 is caught in a hail of gunfire. Dice has ducked down, and shielded by the other man’s body, is making his mistake.

DICE: STOW THIS! I’M OUT OF HERE!

Frame 3: A headshot of Dredd in the foreground, behind we can see Keys. Bullets are wizzing past and between them. One is pinging of Dredd’s helmet. He doesn’t seem to notice.

DREDD: RUNNER!

KEYS: HE’S MINE DREDD!

Frame 4: Dredd again. This time from the opposite side, a nice dramatic shot of him on the bike. The judge riding on his other side is taking a shot in the chest, and falling back off his bike.

JUDGE: AAHHHHGH!

DREDD: GRUD! THAT’S IT!

Frame 5: We’re with Judge Keys as he chases Dice. Keys has his back to us, riding his lawmaster. We can see past his shoulder, Dice is running towards a doorway, not too far away.

KEYS: HOLD IT CITIZEN!

Frame 6: Dice is diving out through the door, Keys is in the background, firing his lawgiver. A bullet is bouncing from the frame.

DICE: YEAH, RIGHT!

Frame 7: Back inside the warehouse. Dredd is gunning his bike, cannons blazing.

DREDD: BIKE CANNON!

SFX: BUDDA! BUDDA! BUDDA!

Frame 8: The two remaining perps are cut down in the hail of fire from the bike.

Page 3:
Five frames.

Frame 1: Dice is in the foreground, on the left of the frame, he is standing behind a cargo crate, a look of desperation on his face, hands clutching the package to his chest. On the right of the frame, and further in the background, Keys is standing in the doorway, his gun in hand.

Frame 2: Side view of Judge Keys, making his way carefully towards the corner where Dice is hidden.

KEYS: I KNOW YOU’RE THERE, COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!

Frame 3: Dice is still pressed up tight against the container, but now he has a slight smile playing on him lips.

DICE: I KNOW THAT VOICE...

Frame 4: Dice has stepped out from behind the container with his hands in the air. He’s still holding the bag of sugar. His has a massive grin on his face, and we can see why he’s called ‘Dice’. His two front upper teeth have been removed, and replaced by a couple of dice.

DICE: I SURRENDER, JUDGE.

Frame 5: Keys has lowered his gun. He’s looking at Dice.

KEYS: GRUD...

Page 4:
Eight frames.

Frame 1: Dredd is standing over the injured judge. The injured judge is being treated by one of the other judges in the group, but he’s fighting a loosing battle. There is a big hole in his chest, and a lot of blood.

DREDD: CONTROL, WHERE’S THAT MED-WAGON?

Frame 2: Dredd has turned his head in the direction of Judge Keys, who is approaching.

DREDD: WHERE’S YOUR PERP KEYS?

Frame 3: Keys has his head down slightly, avoiding eye contact with Dredd.

KEYS: HE... GOT AWAY.

Frame 4: Dredd, clearly in a rage, is looming over Keys.

DREDD: GOT AWAY!? YOUR STUPIDITY JUST PUT A COUPLE OF KILOS OF PURE SUGAR ON THE STREET!

DREDD CONTINUED: I WANT A FULL REPORT ON THIS! YOU’LL BE LUCKY IF YOU’RE NOT ON A CHARGE!

Frame 5: Keys is standing at attention, trying his best to look like a judge. In the background, we see the meds arriving, and beginning to tend the wounded judge.

KEYS: YES SIR.

Frame 6: Dredd is turning away from Keys towards the meds.

KEYS: MIND IF I TAKE CARE OF THE CLEAN-UP DREDD?

Frame 7: Dredd hasn’t bothered to move, he has just turned his head to face Keys, as if he can’t be bothered with him anymore.

DREDD: ALRIGHT. JUST DON’T SCREW THAT UP TOO.

Frame 8: Keys is in the foreground, walking towards us, with his back to Dredd. We can see Dredd over his shoulder. Dredd is staring thoughtfully at Keys.

Page 5:

Frame 1: Keys is standing alone in the middle of the warehouse. The rest of the judges have left. Maybe we can see the bloodstain where the judge fell on the floor.

KEYS: ALRIGHT, THEY’RE GONE!

Frame 2: In a shadowy corner, Dice emerges from the darkness, a smile on his face.

DICE: CHEERS TERRY.

Frame 3: Keys is snarling at Dice, leaning over him. Dice still has a smirk on his face.

KEYS: DON’T CALL ME THAT! I AM A MEGA CITY JUDGE! DO YOU REALISE WHAT I JUST DID FOR YOU!?

DICE: SURE TER- JUDGE.

Frame 4: Dice is standing in front of Keys, his hand resting on the judge’s shoulder in a gesture of confidence.

DICE: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID, AND I APPERCIATE IT. BUT THAT’S WHAT BROTHERS ARE FOR.

Frame 5: Tight on Keys’ face.

KEYS: GET OUT OF HERE.

Frame 6: Full length shot of Keys, standing with his head bowed, as in the background, Dice is ducking out of the warehouse, still holding his bag of sugar.
