Davis Interview Part 2

What
was the reaction when you submitted your most recent cover for issue 1315?
I think Matt ( Editor 2000ad) liked it but was keen to make it look like Sin was
having fun....so not upsetting WHSmith!!! I had got good reference for it from
various fetish mags so it really was fun to do.
2000AD
seems to be going through a creative renaissance since it was bought up by Rebellion.
Have you noticed any particular changes in your dealings with the comic?
Not really....i've always got on well with all the previous editors etc but I
think the great thing now is that Rebellion are really pushing the titles profile..with
t-shirts , graphic novels, audio cd's and stuff like that...it all helps to raise
the profile and create more interest in the characters..there was a time that
there was NO publicity at all for the mag and it was a bit depressing for all
concerned...
The somewhat
short-lived B.L.A.I.R.1 was one of the very few times 2000AD got recognised by
the mainstream press - with an appearance on "Have I Got News For You"
being a particular example. Did this have any effect on your career at the time?
No...apart from featuring in a lot of papers...though no credit.....that's the
way it goes...
You've
done a fair amount of work on Judge Dredd. Do you take a different approach to
your Dredd artwork from Sinister Dexter, and are there more artistic restraints
when working on such an established character?
I don't feel 100% comfortable with dredd...when there's Henry Flint in this world
, all my efforts fall short...i much prefer Sin/dex...they're like comfy slippers
now!
What project
will you be working on after "The Off-Lode Experience"?
I'm currently working on 'Black Siddha' with Pat Mills at the moment. It's a great
story about Ancient Indian mythology so it's really exciting to be in at the start
of a story..and Pat's really terrific to work with.....and after that maybe more
.....Sin Dex...
And finally,
are there any characters that you would like to work on?
Not really although i'd like to do a Bec and Kawl cover (is that spelt right?)..Steve
Roberts has done a great job with those characters ...and a Durham Red one too
....although.... thinking about it......Mark Harrison's stuff is too good to follow!!
